Houston Mayor fudges the numbers for gun control

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has called for more gun control after what he claims is an increase in the number of  mass shootings in Texas from 40 to 65, a jump of more than sixty percent. The mayor blames the Texas Carry Act, better-known as permitless carry.

There’s just one problem. That isn’t quite true.

Mayor Turner is misleading Texans, hoping no one will check the facts. He is deliberately misrepresenting the numbers just to push his own political agenda.

Here are the facts. Mayor Turner began his count on June 13, 2021, the day Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 1927, the permitless carry law passed by the Legislature.  But the law didn’t go into effect until nearly three months later, on September first. So the law wouldn’t have had any impact in June, July, or August.

Counting from the effective date, the number of mass shootings increased less than 18%, from 45 to 53. This is comparable to the increase in California, a state that was passing additional gun control laws in 2021 and 2022.

Mayor Tuner also neglected to mention that since the Texas Carry Act went into effect, mass shootings in his own city plunged 41% and the number of homicides in Houston was also down, according to Houston Police Department offense reports

In fact, comparing the HPD’s reports for the first six months of 2022, to the same period in 2021, the homicide rate went up 16% in the high-crime areas but dropped 23% in the rest of the city.

The Texas State Rifle Association cannot stay silent and allow Mayor Turner – or anyone else – to score political points on the backs of peaceable, law-abiding citizens.

Mayor Turner, you can and should be better than this. Stop misleading Texans and your own constituents: Tell the truth!
